Addiction

What is addiction?

The word addiction is often only associated with hard drugs. However addiction affects millions of people in various forms such as alcohol abuse, eating disorders, prescription drugs, sex, pornography, relationships, nicotine, gambling and even gaming.

Addiction is a physiological, psychological and spiritual disease for which there is no known medical cure. Addiction is a family disease, often handed down from one generation to the next. Its tentacles affect the whole family unit causing dysfunctional behavioral problems amongst all members of the affected family.

Family members are often shocked to learn that the whole family needs help and not just the addict themselves. Children brought up in dysfunctional families take on roles as coping mechanisms becoming “adult children” at an early age. Spouses and or parents of addicts normally suffer from co-dependency problems unconsciously enabling the addict’s behavior. This is a vicious circle as each member of the family takes on their role within the family unit. Without intervention addiction will like cancer destroy the whole family.
